Obama Inguration Speech Rhetoric

Logos: “In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.”

Ethos : “My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors”

Pathos: “Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.”

Deadly Ping Pong

When it comes to Njal a very important theme that one can see is vengeance. Although it is not as clear in the men with women it is a completely different story. When Gunnar won the Law suit in the very first chapters of the story the other men didn’t really want any revenge for what had happened but rather left Gunnar alone. Later on when he married it is his wife that begins all the trouble. Although this is in some way a sexist remark (for apparently only women bring evil)the main idea can be seen. Revenge started with a wood and it ended in death after death. I don’t think that for them these deaths were as bad for those that died were only slaves and barely treated humanely. Yet the problem remains that after that first death because of the wood more and more started to die. Njal and Gunnar, although they had their friendship put to test they remained together and tried by all means to stop their wives. Njal didn’t make it so apparent because he probably knew it wouldn’t work.

I decided to make it with an allusion to the game ping pong. It is a game on a small table which apparently which can be seen in Njal’s Saga. All that huge fight and all those lives lost because of wood. The ball is death and eventually all have to feel its burden but the players (in this case the two wives) allowed themselves to be consumed by the game and the only thing they cared about was passing the ball to the other side as quickly as possible. They didn’t care about the friendship between their husbands all that mattered was revenge. It is sad to see that it is possible for people to allow themselves to be consumed by all this hate and desire to do evil.

Finally, revenge affects us all that surround those who decide to play the game as passionately as they did. If such a thing is allowed to continue even the most pure and good can allow themselves to be dragged in this game. “The news reached the Althing; Njal had it told to him three times and then said, “More men than I expected have now become killers.” (p.67) I believe that this shows us the ability that all men posses to do evil as well as good. No matter how pure a person is they can still kill. Although most of the times it requires a very strong force to make someone reach this extreme, the desire for Vengeance has proven to be strong enough to bend almost any will.

Revenge exists today in more subtle ways or at least more hidden from our subconscious so that we can justify all which we do wrong. Some justice systems can approach Vengance more than actual justice and many of our actions are linked to this. We are allowed to feel the temptation that comes from the desire of revenge but we shouldn’t let it consume us. Otherwise we might end up like Gunnar’s and Njal’s wives fighting constantly over no reason but to keep fighting and struggling to survive in a situation where there is no good or evil. Where there is only darkness that will one day be illuminated by a greater purpose that will leave these little fights behind.

A Modern Idea

In all the ancient texts I have read until now women had a secondary role on society. Although they were essential their work was never appreciated and their opinions were never taken in to count. In Njal we see that women have much more power than in any other book and thus, have a greater role. At one point they even had the power to break the friendship between Njal and Gunnar.““There’s little use to me in being married to the most manly man in Iceland,” said Hallgerd, “if you don’t avenge this, Gunnar.”(p.57) She attempted to manipulate her husband into starting a fight for her honor. In no other book I have read (for this class) was there a woman that would contradict or say an opinion about a situation. There was a tacit contract which made any form of female expression punishable.

On the other hand here, Gunnar’s wife, has the liberty to not only say as she thinks, do as she wishes but also, can blattantly attempt to manipulate her husband with her own influence. Instead of there being a serious conflict all that happened was Gunnar and his wife left. There was no violent act but rather a sorrow for what she had done. In Confucius for example, women would have never been allowed to go that far.

Another representation is the ability of women to give orders and to control. “Bergotha spoke with Svart and told him to go to Raudskrid and chop wood – “and I will send men to haul it home.””(p.58) They did have a servant and he was a man. I believe that this showed that money gave social status in Iceland, more than if you were a woman or a man. I think at to some point women could’ve gained some political power if they were to be rich enough. Not as much as today but certainly much more than what is told to us by other similar textsor the time's stereotype.

It is also important to point out that unlike other culture women could choose whom they wanted to marry with. This can be seen the moment that Gunnar decides to marry Hallgerd. He had to ask her if she would marry him and then go for her parents blessing. Hallgerd even said that she was very selective with men. “It’s not that,” she said, “but I’m very demanding when it comes to men.” ” (p.53) This is a rather modern idea for women were never allowed to marry whom they wanted but only those that benefit the family’s interests.

Finally, women having similar status to men is a very modern idea. Only until very recently have women been granted the same legal status as men. This at the moment was a great breakthrough and seeing women as presidents would’ve been unconceivable years ago. It is very interesting to see that ancient cultures were already developing such social equality hundreds of years ago. If we have been able to do such incredible breakthroughs within so little time where will we be in another century?

The Unbreakable Bond

The will to continue with a person even in the worst of times has to be great. It isn’t easy to stand with someone and help them when they are in trouble and really need something of you. Njal is always there as an unconditional friend. Even when he knows that Gunnar’s marriage with Hallgerd would make their friendship suffer greatly he stood his ground and remained with his friend. ““Every kind of evil will come from her when she moves east,” said Njal. “She shall never spoil our friendship,” Said Gunnar. “It will come close to that,” said Njal “but you will always make amends for her.”” (p.54) Also Njal new that helping Gunnar achieve all that which he did would have a great cost for all would envy Gunnar and that would never work to their advantage. “Njal said that he was a most valiant man –“And though you have been much tried, you will be tried much more, because many men will envy you.” (p.52)

A very close friendship can bring truble fo being around close to a person or a group of people too much will only make it a matter of time before someone says something inapropiate or something goes wrong. This is proved here: “It was the custom between Gunnar and Njal, because of their close friendship that every winter one of them would invite the other to his home for a winter feast. It was now Gunnar’s turn to be Njal’s guest at the winter feast, and so he had Hallgerd went to Bergthorshvol. Helgi and his wife were no there. Njal welcomed them and they had been there while Helgi and his wife Thorhalla retuned. Bergthora went up to the cross- bench, together with Thorhalla, and spoke to Hallgerd :”you must move aside for this woman.” Hallgerd spoke: “I’ll not move aside for anyone, and I won’t sit in the corner like a cast-off hag.”” (p.57) This is but an example of the problems that appeared due to the marriage of Hallger an Gunnar. Of course Gunnar defended Njal but this truly showed what a great friendship they had. They never allowed anything to stand in their way even when situations and people they love try to separate them they never really argue and defend each other. That I believe is true Friendship.

Today many things are called friendship sadly not many are even close to the bond that Njal and Gunnar had. Although it can be seen as an idealized friendship it is what all should aspire to become. The best part of this friendship is that it proves that friends really show when there are bad times. It is impressive how many of the concepts we consider modern have been around for many years. Not said as explicitly but in a rather subtle way like in this book.

Honor: A lifestyle

In Njal’s Saga honor is a main theme. Almost every aspect of the story has to do with it. An example of this can be seen in the Law suits from the beginning of the story. In those, land and money are not all that is in danger but also honor. The winner as Gunnar was obtains honor from winning the case and as for the looser isn’t mentioned much after. It is plausible to presume tough that He might not be as honorable as he was when he entered the courtroom that day. “Everybody then rode home from the Thing, and Gunnar had gained much honour from the case.” (p.43) Hoskluld apparently didn’t leave that encounter in the best of conditions since he had to surrender for fear of what could happen to him if he faced Gunnar. I can only guess that doing so was dishonorable.

The definition of honor is something of outmost importance when it comes to Njal. Although Gunnar earned many battles honor wasn’t mentioned on them. Although apparently what he did was honorable he had to return home for it to be mentioned more directly. “Kolskegg urged him to ride to the Thing-“your honour will increase there because many men will seek your company.”” (p.52) I believe that the definition of honor as mentioned in Njal’s ASaga can be taken out of this sentence. It most likely means that if people want to fight at your side and be with you for all of what you did is honor. The more you have the more people will want to fight at your side.

Although this seems like a good way of life for Gunnar, it is a dangerous way and many people did die in the raids he conducted. Although it seems as though Gunnar were happy with his way of life he continually searched for something more which probably was the reason why he married Hallgerd. It probably is an indication that honor alone can’t suffice the spiritual needs of a person. As a lifestyle honor is violent and empty. There will always be a point where love is the only one that can fill the gap.

Taken in today’s context I don’t think honor as defined by this book is necessarily so important. I think that in today’s culture there is neither honor nor love. At least none that are as openly supported this book tells us Icelanders supported honor. It is incredible how much society changes over time. It incredible that once honor could be gained by killing and that now this only brings dishonor and hate.

Jeus vs Njal

When it comes to Njal one can say he has a great amount of similarities with Jesus. First we must say who Jesus truly is a Merciful person “15: Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

16: And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

17: Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.” (Matthew 15-17) Here we can see Jesus being merciful and helping the less fortunate even when these less fortunate have proved his disciples unfaithful. Another person would’ve been mad at both his disciples and the child for reviling such obscure truth but as we can both see Njal and Jesus are above human feelings. To continues with this Discussion one must ask what did Njal do to deserve being called Merciful. We can see this right from the beginning in chapter 20 “He was well off for property and handsome to look at, but there was one thing about him: no beard grew to him. He was so well versed in the law that he had no equal, and he was wise and prophetic, sound of advice and well-intentioned, and whatever he counseled turned out well. He was modest and noble-spirited”(P.35)The key part in this quote was not his good personality but that all those he helped ended up in a good situation. For this to be said in a book that has survived all this time must have meant that there actually was quite some people coming and he helping them. The most remarkable thing was what he did with Gunnar. ““That’s bad,” he said.

“What solution will you offer me?” she said

“He answered, “Take as much as you need of the money I have out on loan.”

“I don’t want to waste your property,” she said.

“Then what do you want?” he said” (p.36)

In this speech we see that Gunnar was a person that came to Njal for help. Njal’s first reaction was to give Gunnar something of his to help him get over the bad situation. Gunnar of course reacted in a more responsible way making it clear that he didn’t want to spend other’s money. This probably is an indication that Njal was really a person that was very giving and self-less similar to what Jesus was and told others to be.

Jesus was not only giving and merciful but also a sage. Since he was twelve on could see Jesus talking to doctors and important people

“42: And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43: And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44: But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45: And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46: And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47: And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.” (Luke2 42-47)

This clearly shows Jesus as a very wise person even at an early age. Njal might not have been this smart when he was twelve but still he was a very wise person that continually proved this by predicting the future and telling other s what to do in order o obtain something using the laws to his benefit. This is what he did with Gundar and we can see this here “They do a lot of nasty things,” you must say

“Are you familiar with Reykjadal?” he will say.

“I am familiar with all of Iceland,” you must say.

“Are there any might heroes in Reykjadal?” he will say.

“They are thieves and rogues,” you must say.” (p.38)

All of this prediction proves that either there was something magical about Njal or that he was smart enough to read people and be able to predict how they would react and thus telling others how to manipulate people in a certain way to benefit themselves. The most important thing we see is that although both Jesus and Njal have this great power they continually use it to help others.

Finally we can also see that Njal and Jesus were also very modest. Jesus never claimed that it was his power which with he healed the people but rather God’s power working through him. “ 1: Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2: Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.” (Matthew 6 1-2)

Here we see Jesus teaching people that showing all that they do to glorify themselves amongst men will not help them enter the kingdom of heaven and because Jesus was the son of God and because of this could enter the kingdom of heaven he was a very modest person.

Njal showed it in another way. He was the mastermind of all that happened in order to end with the victory of Gunnar. “Gunnar showed the money to Njal. “This has worked out well,” he said. “and all because of you,” said Gunnar.” (p.43)

This Proves to me that he really was there pulling the strings of all that happened but even when things ended just like he had planned he didn’t brag around taking all the credit but rather stayed back and allowed others to enjoy while he had a deeper satisfaction.

A Hidden Jesus

When the world began all was darkness and God came and gave light unto this and created a man which was John. John had seen the holy light and he was witness to it his whole life. That light with which all men are brought to this world with. John tells everyone that he isn’t the light but ensure that it is coming and all he is doing is clearing the way for it.

One day John the Baptist was saying that soon would a man that he could never be compared with would come and unlike John he would baptize people with the Holy Spirit rather than with the water. That same day came Jesus and he was baptized by John, Jesus the son of God and the son of Joseph.

In Cana there was a wedding party and Jesus with his mother attended there. His mother asked him to make miracle and make wine for they had run out. Jesus didn’t want to but accepted to do this and ordered the servants to fill Water pots with water and then he ordered the servants to give that out. The water had been made into wine.

Another time he was in Jerusalem and he met with some Pharisees. He told to them that he could destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. They told him that wasn’t possible for it had taken 46 years to build that temple but the temple he was meaning was the body.

Jesus then finds Nicodemus which comes to him at night and calls him rabbi. He is convinced that Jesus is from God because of all the miracles he has done. But then asks him how to reach the Kingdom of heaven. Jesus then answers him that those who believe in the son of God shall obtain entrance in to the Kingdom of heaven. After this Jesus was baptizing people and apparently more than John. His disciples tell John this but he explain that anything that can be received can only be given from God and that although he was sent first than Jesus, Christ is still greater than him.

After this Jesus went to a small town where he met a Samaritan woman while all his disciples were looking for something to eat. He asks her if she could give him some of her water. She tells him that Jews and Samaritans don’t talk to each other. Then he told her that if she would’ve known who he was she would have asked for the water that he could offer. Jesus then explained to her that he could give her living water which would give her eternal life. Then he asked her to bring her husband but she told him that she wasn’t married. He answered that she had been married five times before and that she had a husband at the moment. She was surprised at this wisdom and realized that Jesus was a great prophet. He then explained to her that the time would come when people will worship God in spirit no matter what the flesh was. Finally after explaining how people were going to worship in the future the woman said that the Messiah would come and explain all Jesus answered that he was the Messiah. When Jesus goes to Canaan a very important man goes to him and asks him to heal his son. Christ didn’t seem very happy about this because people only believed him once he performed these miracles.

At the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem Jesus cured another man. Because he did this on Sabbath and because of his constant comparisons to God he was being persecuted. He tell those that were doing this that his power came to from his father and because he was human he understood all that humans were and therefore could judge us. Finally he talked about the future and said that the dead will rise, the good given life and the bad condemned.

After this Jesus did feed a multitude with little bread and fish and walked on water. In the end he explained that he is the living bread and drink to achieve salvation. That those who would follow him would never hunger and those who believed in him would never thirst. Following this Jesus found a man which was blind and his disciples asked him what sin did that man do to deserve being born blind. The man hadn’t sinned but then Jesus spit on the ground and clay came off. He then put the clay n the man’s eyes and told him to wash them in a nearby fountain. He did so and he could see. It was the Sabbath day and some Pharisees found the man which had been blind and recognized him. Then they asked him who had done this and he answered Jesus. The Pharisees had a great discussion of sins and whether God would listen to people who have sinned or even if Jesus was really the son of God. Finally they met Christ and asked him about this. He told them that the blind man hadn’t sinned but it rather was the people who could see the one who sinned.

Christ went to a town where he found Mary and Martha. There had a very dear friend of him died. They told him that if he would’ve been there he would still be living. Jesus was very sorry for this and even cried. Later he was taken to the tomb to resurrect him. After the reviving of Lazarus came the second Passover. In that moment Mary came and poured very expensive ointment in his feet. Judas then said that why was that ointment not given to the poor. Jesus answered that the poor would be there to receive things from there but he would not always be with them. Also he talked about his death and how it would be and why he was here to save the people and not to judge them.

Finally came the last supper in which Jesus washed his disciples feet and where he revealed who would betray him and who would deny him three times before the cock crow. The most important part of this was what he said after. He told his disciples that those who believed in him would find the path of his kingdom though him but those who didn’t would take all that he did in his Father’s name and not in both his and Gods’ name. Above all he made it clear that all those who really loved him would follow his final commandment to love other as much as he loved them. He also called them friends and not servants which really meant a lot to them. In the end he also told them that their mission would be hard and that the world would hate them but eventually they would give fruit and do well to the world.

To end this, arrived Judas which sold away Jesus. In the moment where all the men with weapons and torches came he asked them who were they looking for and they said Jesus of Nazareth. They all fell down the first time but the second time Jesus asked this and they answered nothing happened. When Peter saw that they had taken Jesus he cut of one of the ears of a person. Jesus told him not to do that and went with them. Caiaphas the high priest did a trial on him and sent him to Pontius Pilate. Although he found no reason to imprison him he allowed the people to decide. What they decided sadly was to crucify him and free the other which was a robber. He had to carry the cross and was nailed to it. He died and was covered with several clothes of linen and spices. The tomb was sealed. A week later came Mary Magdalene and saw that the tomb was open and that the body was missing. She started to cry but saw two angels sitting close by and they asked her why she sad was and who was she looking for. They told her that Jesus had come back and where he was. In the end all the gospels found about this and went to see him and worship him.

Jesus for the People

Only 2009 years ago there was a boy born on the outskirts of Belen. Before his birth an angel had appeared unto Joseph telling him that Mary would soon have a child. During his first moments he was accompanied by his mother, his father, a cow, an ass and three wise men which were guided to him by a star which was the brightest in the sky. To little Jesus these wise men brought gifts but sadly Joseph had to escape to Egypt with Jesus for Herold killed all the children of the city about Jesus’ age as an attempt to kill him.

Jesus was later baptized by John the Baptist. Although at the moment he had been a very important person for the Kingdom of God for he had worked every day to give people the opportunity to be part of it he was humbled by the presence of such an important person. In the moment of his baptism God himself was there to presence it as a Dove. From that moment on he was known as the Son of God.

Jesus in his adulthood had to face the Satan and his temptations. First, while he was fasting, Satan came and told him to make stones in to bread yet he resisted and said souls feed from more than bread. Another time he was tempted to throw himself from a rooftop but he answered that one must not tempt the lord. Finally Satan tried to make him bow to him in exchange of power and wealth but Jesus answered that the Lord was the one true god one must bow to.

After his first appearance to his disciples in Galilee Jesus focused most of his time in helping the poor, healing the sick and doing exorcisms. People were surprised by his teachings on how to enter the kingdom of heaven by doing well to those who most need it.

Jesus also did a great thing, he challenged and injustice of the time. The Jewish religious system was corrupt at the time and he not only said what was wrong but also tried doing something about it. When he entered what was supposed to be a temple for God he found people selling animals for sacrifices. He found this incredibly insulting for not only had they made the temple a place for business but also scared people with the idea that if they didn’t sacrifice animals for God there would be punishment. Shocked by the corruption of God’s temple he freed the animals from their cages and turned the tables around spreading everything on the floor. With this action he made many enemies because he showed a defiant position towards the rest of the Jewish system at the time.

He continued to travel and taught parables to people trying to show them how to live in such a way as to obtain eternal happiness in the Kingdom of Heaven. He explained many complex themes that thanks to his wisdom made very easy to understand. Once he explained to his disciple why he talked in parables. He said to them that they had been gifted to see, understand and listen to many things others wouldn’t comprehend but with something more visual and above all something they could relate to. This was but one of the many ways in which he showed the great divine wisdom he had.

Not long after the event in the temple courtyard the scribes had began to think of ways to get rid of Jesus. Because it was during the feast of Passover they decided to do it in a subtle way making sure few realized what had happened. It was during the Passover eve that Jesus and his disciples had their last supper. It was then Jesus revealed Judas would be the one who would betray him and Peter would deny him three times before the cock crow. During that night Jesus prayed to God that if it were possible all the torture he would have to go through were prevented but only if it were God’s will. All his disciples fell asleep while he prayed to God. He tried to wake them up but it was useless. After several times of repeating this prayer the scribes had come with armed people. His disciples awoke and one of them cut one of the ears of a person from the armed mob. Jesus was disappointed with this and explained that if he would’ve wanted to avoid that situation he would have done so already but also explained that the purpose of this was greater than his life. He was taken and was judged in front of the scribes. After passing several false witnesses he was judged on blasphemy upon what one of those said. The Blasphemy which with he was accused of was that he had affirmed he could destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days.

After his judgment Christ was taken to the governor Pontius Pilate who at first found no reason to incriminate him. The governor’s wife told him that she was told in a dream that Jesus was not to be harmed. Pontius tried to convince the people that Christ had done nothing wrong but the scribes had convinced the people that Jesus was dangerous and evil. Because of the feast that was going on Pontius was to release a prisoner which the people chose. Barabbas was the one who obtained his freedom while the people chose to crucify Jesus. Pontius, seeing that Christ was a good man, didn’t want his to suffer such a horrible fate and told the people what he thought but they didn’t listen. He then decided to wash his hands telling them that the blood of that good man would be on their hands not his. The people accepted this happily.

So Jesus was taken and was given a crown of spines and a purple robe. He was called the “King of the Jews” by the people and the guards. He was mocked and was spit on. He bared the cross but when he could no more a farmer that was passing by helped him. When he finally reached his destination he was given vinegar to drink and was nailed to the cross. One of the thieves that were with him asked him that if he was able to destroy and rebuild the temple in three days why then did he not save himself? Jesus didn’t answer and at one point He even asked, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Yet the moment he died there was an earthquake and the dead saints arose. The people finally realized that the man which had been preaching around Galilee for about a Year and had taught them great lessons about life was truly the son of God.

Three days later, just as he had said it would happen, Jesus rose from his tomb with the help of an angel which moved the huge boulder which was placed at its entrances that the disciples wouldn’t fake the resurrection by taking the body away. He then appeared to his disciples and they worshipped him. He still remains with us to this day.

Jesus, the Teacher

This story begins like that of all humans with the beginning of the life of a child. But it didn’t start in a normal way. Rather it was greatly influenced by a superior being, God. Zacharias was a servant of God. It was a completely normal day for him until he entered the temple of God alone. In that moment he had a vision of an angel. The Angel told him that he would bear a child and that this child would be called John. He argued with the Angel saying that his wife was barren and that she was too old for conceiving. The angel seeing this as lack of faith made Zacharias unable to talk properly as he left the temple that day. Around that time Mary’s day was going as usual until an angel appeared unto her and said that that she would have a child soon and that his name would be Jesus. Mary was confused for she wasn’t married and then the angel explained that the newborn would not be the son of any man but that it would be conceived through divine power and therefore he would not be called by anything else than the Son of God. Mary married Joseph and Zacharias’ wife had her son. The Day he was born people asked what he would be named and some said Zacharias like its father but then the mother said the name of the child would be John. No one had that name but Zacharias speaking for the first time in a long time said that the name of the kid would be John. From that day on he was able to speak normally.

Mary and Joseph had to go to Bethlehem to be taxed. It was during that time that Mary entered labor. They were not able to find a place to stay in, but an angle guided them to safety and it was in that time Jesus was born. After the eight days of his circumcision the boy was called Jesus. It was then decided that Joseph and Mary would go to Jerusalem in order to present the newborn to God and offer a Sacrifice. They left but decided to go to Jerusalem from that day on to pass the feast of Passover. When Jesus was twelve years old he got lost in the city. They found him eventually in the middle of doctors and wise people who were asking Jesus questions and all were amazed by the wisdom of his answers. Mary asked Jesus why he would do that, that he had made his father and her very worried. Then he answered that all he was doing was do his father’s business.

Later would Jesus be Baptized by John the Baptist who kept saying to the people that someone greater than him would one day baptize them not with water but with the Holy Spirit and with fire. The day Jesus was baptized God descended as a dove and said that he was pleased with Jesus, his son. After this Jesus was taken to the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil for Forty days. First the Devil told him to turn the stone in to bread but Jesus answered that men must feed from the words of the lord more than from the bread. Then the Devil took him up to a mountain and asked him to worship him in exchange for all the lands, wealth and power he could see. Jesus said that the only one who men were to worship was God. Finally Satan took Jesus to the roof of a temple and told him to jump and that angels would come down to save him but he told Satan that he would never be able to tempt the Son of the Lord. Jesus was then returned by divine power to Galilee. After preaching in his town he was exiled from it and went to Capernaum where he did several miracles including healing and an exorcism.

It was during this period of time that Jesus once forgave a man’s sins. The Pharisees and the scribes were insulted by this because only God could forgive sins. Although Jesus answered with great wisdom it was from this day on that the representatives of the Jewish religion began to dislike him greatly. Also, because his disciples didn’t fast or do many of the ordinary things disciple or John and the Pharisees did. Jesus did confront the formal representatives of the Jewish religions at the time which were the scribes and the Pharisees several times. His teaching one after the other made people believe that they would enter the kingdom of heaven by being merciful, doing good to others and loving others as they love God.

One he was eating at the Pharisees and there a woman came to wash his feet with tears, ointment and her hair. This woman was a sinner and because of her faith all her sins were forgiven. Then Jesus met Mary Magdalene which was possessed by many devils and Jesus banished them. When Christ was in a town of Galilee he met a woman named Martha which took him into her home. While she made food and prepared the place for the guests Jesus and her sister Mary were sitting talking with the disciples about other things. Then Mary asked Jesus if he was going to allow that she did all the chores alone while her sister sat down and did nothing. Jesus answered that although she was worried about many things the one thing that Mary chose to worry about was the only one that really mattered and that would not be taken from her.

Then came Passover, which Jesus decides to celebrate in Jerusalem. It was Passover eve when Jesus having his last supper told all that Judas would betray him and that Peter would deny him three times before the cock crow. After the supper Jesus went to pray and while he did he was so nervous that he began to sweat blood. Eventually came Judas and he turned him in to the Pharisees by kissing Jesus. Then Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate who allowed the people to judge Jesus. They decided to crucify him. Although the governor didn’t agree with this he still allowed it to happen. The torture which he had to go through was immense. People mocked him and put a crown of spines in his head and he was hit and had to carry the cross a great distance. Only drinking vinegar he then died but to make clear to all people that that was the son of God, the almighty shook the earth and that day everyone knew that Jesus really had been the son of God. Three days later he arose from his tomb with the help of an angel for it had been sealed to avoid his disciples to fake the resurrection. When he had risen everyone worshipped him. Thanks to him we could finally see that the road to heaven can only be reached by giving, working for the poor and sacrificing.
